NVIDIA has a new workstation GPU out this week, the NVIDIA RTX A5500. The “A” tells us that this is an Ampere generation part, not the newly announced “Hopper” generation that we will start to see in very high-end servers later this year. What is more, this new GPU has a few specs that are very similar to the Geforce RTX 3080 Ti that we have a GTC 2022 giveaway for this week. The two cards are very different and so let us see why.

Here are the key specs for the NVIDIA RTX A5500, you will quickly notice that this is a 10,240 CUDA core GPU, like the RTX 3080 Ti.

There are major differences as well. A few examples are that the A5500 uses GDDR6 and has twice the memory of the desktop part with 24GB. This memory is also ECC memory. Even with twice the memory, we get a 230W power envelope while the 3080 Ti is a 350W part. Clearly, NVIDIA is not just rebranding the RTX 3080 Ti, but it has more going on that is more in line with the workstation GPUs it used to call “Quadro” years ago.

Final Words

We have already seen some servers support these. We had confirmation that the ASUS RS720A-E11-RS24U we reviewed along with the company’s E11 generation of the E10 servers we reviewed including the ASUS ESC4000A-E10 and ASUS RS700-E10-RS12U now support the NVIDIA RTX A5500 in multi-GPU configurations.

It is always great to see new GPU. We may have readers confused why the new RTX A5500 is not a “Hopper” GPU. This is NVIDIA’s custom. New architectures launch on the high-end chips, and then variants trickle down to lower-end segments. Ampere will be with us for some time longer so we should set that expectation.

Still, this is a nice update later in the cycle with a new GPU. Now, about that giveaway.
