MiTAC Goldstone GS1D11 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable 2P at OCP Regional Summit 2023 Prague
The big new change of the Goldstone GS1D11 is the CPU and memory. This is a dual-socket 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable server with 2DIMMs per channel (2DPC) mode for a total of 32 DIMMs. One can easily see how little room there is around the server just due to all of these DIMM slots, something we discussed in Why 2 DIMMs Per Channel Will Matter Less in Servers.
At the rear of the chassis, we get two full-height expansion card slots. One fun item is that normally PCIe slots are named numerically like “PCIe 1”, “PCIe 2”, and so forth. These are named PCIe L for the left and PCIe R for the right.
Something one may notice is the metal sides of the chassis. These are extension pieces meant to take a 19″ rack server and extend it into a 1OU rack sled form factor. The rear of the system is just an OCP Rack V3 bus bar so this is a front I/O system.
One of the challenges with the system is that the MCIO PCie Gen5 connectors are on the fan side near the bus bar.
Overall, this was just an interesting system to see. We did not get to show as many OCP Sapphire Rapids systems last fall but hope to show more over the coming months.
