The redundant power supplies are 750W 80Plus Platinum AcBel units.

The power consumption at maximum was very similar between the 4th Gen and 5th Gen Xeon units. We would see power consumption at around 400-500W maximum. At idle, that is where the 5th Gen tends to be much better and it is running at around 80-90W.

In the second half of 2018, we introduced the STH Server Spider as a quick reference to where a server system’s aptitude lies. Our goal is to start giving a quick visual depiction of the types of parameters that a server is targeted at.

This server is not designed for maximum density. Instead, it is designed for lower costs. Examples are in front it has SATA instead of all NVMe. In the rear, it has a single PCIe Gen5 x16 slot. Of course, it is also a single socket 8 DIMM slot system. With that said, that is the exact point of this system.

Final Words

This is a server that makes a lot of sense when one understands the target market. The system is designed for those hosting applications that need 4th or 5th Gen Intel Xeon nodes. Those applications typically have at most 8 DIMMs, rarely have PCIe cards, and maybe have 2-4 SSDs maximum.

Beyond that, the next important feature is that it is a cost-optimized platform. Having fewer slots and using a more standard form factor is an example of cost optimizations. Even having onboard 10Gbase-T is another example of a lower-cost higher-speed networking option.

We often get enamored by all of the frills of fancy servers. Sometimes, simply having a server designed for the purpose of putting a new Xeon online with some memory, a few drives, and onboard 10GbE is all one needs. For that, the ASRock Rack 1U8S4E-EGS/2T is a great system.

  1. Kinda a shame they are using a generic MB here, as such 3 of the 4 PCIe slots are completely useless and the DMI is overloaded. The SATA drives alone could saturate DMI. The M.2 and X550 should be connected directly to the CPU instead of one of the unusable PCIe slots.
