Today is the Intel Innovation 2022 keynote. At the event, we expect a number of announcements of new technologies to be announced. Also, later this week we should get to show you some of the new data center technology coming.
Note: We are covering this live, so please excuse typos. Also, the WiFi in the keynote is very poor so even uploading photos is challenging.
Intel Innovation 2022 Keynote Day 1
Pat Gelsinger started the keynote by reiterating that Intel is on track for Intel 18A to bring its foundries up to leading in the industry.
Next, Intel discussed UCIe and had brief messages from TSMC and Samsung supporting UCIe. Pat discussed that the future may very well include some parts from Intel, some from TSMC, Samsung, TI, or others. Chiplets are the future, and a big part of that will be the Intel Foundry Services (IFS) business.
On graphics, Intel discussed its new Intel Flex Series of data Center GPUs.
Intel also showed Ponte Vecchio and Sapphire Rapids HBM. It said that it is shipping blades for Aurora to Argonne.
Intel had an announcement that went out at the same time with a photo.
Finally, it showed the Intel Arc series of GPUs including the A770. That A770 is starting at $329 starting on October 12. That day may sound familiar for some.
At the event, Intel is discussing several of its accelerators that will be available in 4th generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed: Sapphire Rapids. We are going to go into these in more detail on STH over the next few days.
Intel has a demo of AI being deployed in Chipotle that looks a lot like real sense.
Intel is showing off Intel Geti. This is Intel’s software platform to help enterprises manage AI workflows with tools like expert augmented tagging. This is part of Intel’s future plans to increase its software revenue streams.
Intel is now talking about game development. Innovation 2022 is in some ways a resurrection of Intel Developer Forum that ended a few years ago (pre-pandemic.) Something fun on this is that Intel is showing a Falcon Northwest Talon system. This is the same platform we are doing our AMD Ryzen 7000 series testing on as we showed today in ourĀ AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Platform Overview.
Intel showed off Raptor Lake. The Intel Core i9-13900K will be available next month with clock speeds up to 5.8GHz.
The new platform has more P-core caches, more E cores, faster memory support, and more.
There will be, as we would expect, a full SKU stack with the 13th generation Core CPUs.
Early next year, Intel will have a limited volume 6.0GHz processor.
Intel discussed Gaudi 2 and showed that off again comparing it to the A100. NVIDIA is now in the H100 shipping phase.
Intel showed off a flexible display that unrolls with Samsung display that can expand from 13″ to 17″.
Intel Unison allows one to extend displays not just Windows to Windows but also across device platforms.
A younger Pat Gelsinger was talking about Silicon Photonics from 20+ years ago.
This is super cool. Intel has a detachable silicon photonics in glass substrate solution being demoed live from a lab.
This is awesome.
Linus Torvalds was on stage discussing the 386 and starting Linux.
He said he could not afford the commercial Unix’s so that is why he started working with the PC.
Pat just gave him the first Intel Lifetime Achievement Award.
Final Words
The 13th generation Intel Core processors are interesting. It is great seeing the Arc GPUs are weeks away and that Ponte Vecchio is shipping. The silicon photonics demo was my personal standout.
