At NVIDIA GTC 2018 Tyan showed off several GPU compute platforms at NVIDIA GTC 2018. One of the platforms, we already reviewed, see Tyan Thunder HX GA88-B5631 Server Review 4x GPU in 1U. Instead, we are going to focus on the newer GPU compute platforms that Tyan showed off at GTC.

NVLink is a hot technology and the Tyan Thunder HX TA88-B7107 takes full advantage of that. It can handle 8x NVIDIA Tesla V100 (or P100) SXM2 GPUs in a 2U chassis.

The Tyan Thunder HX TA88-B7107 takes advantage of new Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs in a dual socket design. It also has features like dual 10GbE for basic networking and four PCIe x16 slots for EDR Infiniband or 100GbE and two M.2 slots. GPUs are supported via four PLX PEX8796 PCIe switches. Power is provided by a 2+2 4.4kW PSU setup.

The Tyan Thunder HX GA88-B8021 was one of the only OEM AMD EPYC solutions we saw on the show floor. We covered the Tyan Thunder HX GA88-B8021 in our piece 1U 4-5x GPU AMD EPYC System from Tyan at SC17 several months ago when it was behind plexiglass. This was the first time STH has seen one up close.

There have been a few updates. For example, the system can now support 4x double wide or 6x single width GPUs, up from 5 in the prototype. One can also swap the PCIe risers and change the PCIe root NUMA node that a GPU is attached to. That adds to the flexibility of the system with a simple riser swap.

There is a single PCIe x16 slot, outside of the GPU risers, that is for 100GbE or EDR Infiniband along with dual NVMe m.2 ports.

Other Notable Items

Tyan also brought their 8x and 10x GPU boxes which are extremely popular. Tyan now has a Skylake version of its popular GPU boxes with the FA77-B7119. This is a product that Tyan has had since the LGA1366 days:

Another item on display, that was hit by a fuzzy photo bug on the STH side, was the 100-bay top loading storage server, the Tyan Thunder SX FA100-B7118:

The Tyan Thunder SX FA100-B7118 is one of the densest 4U storage platforms out there and is not a simple disk shelf. It includes a dual socket Intel Xeon Scalable server as well.
