The TP-Link TL-SG108S-M2 is a cheap, unmanaged, 8-port 2.5GbE switch. Recently, a few readers suggested that we refresh our Ultimate Cheap 2.5GbE Fanless Switch Mega Guide, and we found a few models we had not tested before. This TP-Link switch is extremely popular on Amazon, despite TP-Link being in the news lately. Just for some sense of how popular, as I am writing this, it is the “#1 Best Seller in Computer Networking Switches” somehow. Our sense is that it is because this switch is bundled with a cheap 5-port 1GbE switch in the listing, but still, how could we not have tested this one?

So, we decided to buy one to test and add to our Buyer’s Guide.

TP-Link TL-SG108S-M2 8-port 2.5GbE Switch Hardware Overview
Starting with the faceplate, we get eight 2.5GbE ports and status LEDs. We also reviewed the popular “BrosTrend” switches at the same time, and they do not have the simple status LEDs next to the ports. We like TP-Link’s design better here.

Moving to the rear, we find a Kensington lock port and a 12V 1A power input.

The entire chassis feels decently sturdy, being made of metal rather than plastic.

Both sides have vents to help airflow through the fanless switch.

On top, we get the TP-Link logo and model number. High-contrast model numbers are great for when you need to look up a device’s capabilities a few years in the future.

On the bottom, we get a label. We also get two mounting screw points. This is cheap enough that instead of rubber feet, we just get the circles where you can put rubber feet. We did not see them in the box however, so it seems you have to buy your own.

Inside the switch, this is what we get. We could not get this heatsink off without damaging the switch.

Next, let us get to the management, performance, and power consumption.

The power consumption looks attractive – the price not so much.
Does this also use the Maxlinear chipset?
Are there switches that use Maxlinear that have management and/or SPF cages?
