KYY X90G Monitor Performance

For our monitor testing, we use a Datacolor SpyderPro (Amazon Affiliate) to measure the monitors’ color performance. This is not the fanciest test equipment by any means, but we just wanted to get some general sense of performance. Here is the color gamut on the monitor:

Only 83% of sRGB is noticeable when you are working on these monitors versus other displays. Below, we have the measured color accuracy from our Datacolor SpyderPro.

This is perhaps not the best we have ever seen, but it is far from the worst.

Brightness and Contrast

One small change here is that we are just doing brightness and contrast on one of the panels. The power consumption of changing one panel’s brightness is only 1/3 of the entire display. Still, here are the results:

This is certainly not the brightest we have seen, but it is a decent result.

Key Lessons Learned

For a portable monitor, the size actually can be challenging because you need a lot of space or a large desk for this to work. In a hotel suite at The Venetian / Palazzo in Las Vegas, NV, it is not an issue. In a tight European or New York City hotel room, it is tough. Still, being on the road and having three monitors, one for the game, one to reference, a file handling monitor, in addition to your main notebook screen, is a cheat code for productivity, so long as you are not actively watching the game.

We tried it with the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus, and that notebook was so big that it ran into spacing issues because the frame is a fixed size. The MacBook Pro 14″ and the XPS 14 2026 worked great, but there is a notable screen quality gap between premium notebook screens and the three for $479 KYY solution.

Another annoyance was that getting this to work was more challenging than with a single Type-C monitor. You can see the nest of cables above because we need one to charge the laptop. Then there is one to power the KYY X90G. Then you need another cable to connect the X90G ot the notebook. Beyond cabling, installing a Silicon Motion utility to get all three screens working on the MacBook was not ideal. When you compare that to the model of just connecting a single Type-C monitor with a single cable and no drivers/ utilities, it is very different. Also, this is a different level of capability, so there is a bit more pain to get more screen space. Also, KYY calls this a “quad” monitor, but it is really a triple monitor solution. I am not a fan of calling it a quad when only three monitors are included, assuming you are bringing a fourth that is not included.

Final Words

If you undertake frequent road trips and just want more screen space, then this is a neat option. Having three extra monitors instead of one can be a real productivity boost. The KYY unit is solidly made from metal and feels more premium than a cheap plastic monitor. It probably needs that heft to avoid tipping over as the monitors extend quite far out.

This is a product I am very torn on. Productivity-wise, it is a notable step up from a single Type-C monitor. If you travel a lot, can carry this, and work from locations with a lot of room, then the price makes sense. The “and can carry this” is operative there because you need to make room for it and carry it with you, and then a place to set it up. This was an overall good experience when we could use it, but unlike a smaller single monitor, you have to think a lot more about whether you will take it.
