Samsung T7 2TB Performance
For this, we wanted to run through our standard benchmarks.
CrystalDiskMark Benchmark
CrystalDiskMark is used as a basic starting point for benchmarks as it is something commonly run by end-users as a sanity check. We use both 1GB and 8GB test sizes.

Here is the 8GB test:

Here is the side-by-side:

This is mostly in-line with the T7 Shield, but perhaps slightly better on a few.
ATTO Disk Benchmark
The ATTO Disk Benchmark has been a staple of drive sequential performance testing for years. ATTO was tested at both 256MB and 8GB file sizes.

Here is the 8GB size test:

Here is the side-by-side:

With the same system and same USB port we did not see the same result on the 8GB test falling off a cliff on the T7 Shield which was interesting.
Anvil’s Storage Utilities
Anvil’s Storage Utilities is a comprehensive benchmark that gives us a very in-depth look at the performance of the drives tested. This benchmark was run with both a 1GB and 8GB test size.

Here is the 8GB test:

This is pretty common for 10Gbps drives. The Crucial X9 Pro 2TB beats this in 4K random tests by a decent amount. That is a big deal for some folks looking to run applications off of the drives.
AS SSD Benchmark
AS SSD Benchmark is another good benchmark for testing SSDs. We run all three tests for our series. Like other utilities, it was run with both the default 1GB as well as a larger 10GB test set.

Here is the 10GB result:

Here is the side-by-side:

Again, this is a result close to the Samsung T7 Shield, but where the Crucial X9 Pro’s 4K numbers are much better.
BlackMagic Disk Speed Test
BlackMagic Disk Speed Test is focused on testing storage for use in video workflows.

Although this is what we would expect, in the 10Gbps class of drives the Crucial X9 Pro is able to get a green check for the ProRes 422 HQ 8K DCI 60 Read test. That is some high-end footage with large file sizes, so for those users, it probably makes more sense to be at least at the USB4 drives despite the price premium.
Final Words
The metal case on the Samsung T7 gives it a generally nice feel. At the same time performance is OK, but we would pick the Crucial X9 Pro at this price point given how much better the Crucial 4K random performance is. For sequential workloads like general file transfers, especially of photos and video, it is less of a difference, but if price was equal we might go Crucial.

We showed this with the cover image, but we have red, blue, and black T7 SSDs in the studio. There are folks that will care more about the colors than the 4K random performance. We have also been using the Samsung T7 drives for quite some time, and they have worked well for us without any issues.
Where to Buy
We purchased our unit on Amazon. If you want to get a Samsung T7 2TB, here is the Amazon Affiliate Link.
Also as a quick one, thanks to Sam in the STH studio for doing a lot of the work on this series.
