Qualcomm announced today that SpaceX has selected its Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platforms to power Starlink Mobile’s U.S. nationwide terrestrial 5G network. The multi-year agreement covers tens of thousands of base station sites, with rollout planned to begin in 2027.

Qualcomm Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 Platforms

Starlink Mobile will deploy Massive MIMO radio units using 64 transmit and 64 receive paths (64T64R). That is a high-capacity antenna configuration designed to improve coverage, capacity, and spectral efficiency across the terrestrial network. The Dragonwing QRU100 platform provides highly integrated processing for these Massive MIMO radio units, supporting the radio functions behind that architecture. The Dragonwing QDU100 platform handles high-performance, efficient, latency-sensitive Layer 1 processing. It also sounds like Qualcomm is providing the L1 software for this deployment. That also means it sounds like the L2 and up are being handled by something else.

Qualcomm says the two platforms together are designed to improve performance per watt across both radio and distributed-unit processing. That energy efficiency improves network deployment economics when rolling out tens of thousands of sites. For a nationwide buildout, power draw at each location compounds quickly, and many tower sites face significant power constraints.

Final Words

This is a significant win for Qualcomm’s Dragonwing infrastructure portfolio, which has been deployed in places like Asia but, from what we gather, has not been as popular in the US. It sounds like SpaceX plans to roll out the terrestrial network alongside its satellite constellation, giving Starlink Mobile a path to become a 4th major carrier in the US. The 2027 rollout start under a multi-year agreement means tens of thousands of sites will take time to deploy nationwide. Maybe the most interesting part will be whether SpaceX can accelerate deployment of its 5G network, as it has with its AI compute build-out.
