In a completely surprising turn of events today, ASRock announced its Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 motherboards with a twist. Some of the ASRock Rack Haswell-EP motherboards support DDR3 up to 1866MHz. This is an extremely interesting feature as the general consensus is that we are moving towards the faster and lower power DDR4 with this generation. Aside from DDR3 support, ASRock has a plethora of new offerings. They are certainly trying to aggressively target the market as the consumer side wavers.
We see evidence of this DDR3 with Haswell-EP mixed with standard DDR4 offerings. Right now, DDR4 prices are exorbitant with 128GB priced at around $2000 using 8GB or 16GB DDR4 RDIMMs. We see offerings from ASRock that are largely similar except that they support DDR3:
Kudos to ASRock Rack for thinking outside of the box on this one.

It is good what ASRock released DDR3 motherboards:
But it looks like only some CPUs can be used in those motherboards, because only
E5-2629v3, 2649v3, 2669v3 and 2686v3 support DDR3 memory

I really wished that Asrock made a single socket Xeon E5 v3 motherboard with NVDIMM support, because I only needed 2 DIMMs to be NVDIMMs(For mirrored ZFS ZIL). The rest of the dimms could be regular ECC for a hybrid ECC ram+NVDIMM setup? That would be the best storage platform for serving the “Home”.
