SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD – 2TB Performance
For this, we wanted to run through our standard benchmarks.
CrystalDiskMark Benchmark
CrystalDiskMark is used as a basic starting point for benchmarks as it is something commonly run by end-users as a sanity check. We use both 1GB and 8GB test sizes.

Here is the 8GB test:

Here is the side-by-side:

This is outperforms the Samsung T7 and T7 Shield in a lot of categories. Here is the Samsung T7‘s results for a comparison.

In most cases we would probably prefer the performance of the SanDisk, but in a lot of areas they are very close.
ATTO Disk Benchmark
The ATTO Disk Benchmark has been a staple of drive sequential performance testing for years. ATTO was tested at both 256MB and 8GB file sizes.

Here are the 8GB results:

Here is the side-by-side:

Overall the sequential read and write results are very consistent.
Anvil’s Storage Utilities
Anvil’s Storage Utilities is a comprehensive benchmark that gives us a very in-depth look at the performance of the drives tested. This benchmark was run with both a 1GB and 8GB test size.

Here is the 8GB result:

For an external SSD, these are decent results albeit there are many faster drives on the market at higher price points with faster interface speeds.
AS SSD Benchmark
AS SSD Benchmark is another good benchmark for testing SSDs. We run all three tests for our series. Like other utilities, it was run with both the default 1GB as well as a larger 10GB test set.

Here is the 10GB result:

Here is the side-by-side:

Again, these results are consistent with our other tests.
BlackMagic Disk Speed Test
BlackMagic Disk Speed Test is focused on testing storage for use in video workflows.

Here we can see that almost all of the markers have the green check meaning that this drive is fast enough for majority of formats. This is more than this drives counterparts such as the Samsung T7 and Samsung T7 Shield, and Crucial X9 Pro.
Final Words
The housing on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2TB gives it a nice feel. If you, however are trying to optimize on minimizing space in a bag, then it is certainly far from the smallest SSD we have tested. To some this is is going to be a minor point. If you are like us and often have packed camera bags and are taking four or more of these SSDs, that space difference can be impactful.

The performance is better than the Samsung T7 and T7 Shield and closer to the performance of the Crucial X9 Pro. To us, the decision on this one comes down to price. I am not sure if it is worth paying a bit more for the performance of this drive over the Samsung T7. If performance is really a concern, then upgrading to the 20Gbps or faster classes of drive might make more sense.
Where to Buy
We purchased our unit on Amazon. If you want to get a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD – 2TB, here is the Amazon Affiliate Link.

What are people using these for? More storage for sentry mode?
Not to be confused with the new Extreme PRO which uses a USB4 Gen 3×2 interface and costs about $100 more at the same size.
Also buyer beware, because SanDisk uses such similar shells for their Extreme and Extreme Pro USB SSD products, sometimes you can’t tell the difference between them. (the part # only varies by 1 digit).
Just noticed for those interested, these are on sale today (Jul 10) for $120 for the black and the blue versions.
Are these fixed versions of those that were the source of the lawsuit against Western Digital (https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/08/sandisk-extreme-ssds-are-worthless-multiple-lawsuits-against-wd-say/)?
