Recently we got our first Intel Broadwell-DE platform running. It is a Supermicro X10SDV-F with the Intel Xeon D-1540 SoC onboard in pre-production form. While it has 8 cores and 16 threads, it is 100MHz slower than the production model. The Supermicro X10SDV-F also does not utilize the SoC’s onboard 10 gigabit NIC. The Intel Xeon D-1540 does include both a PCH with a 6 port SATA 3 controller and a dual 10GbE NIC onboard. We decided to fire up Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and to our surprise everything worked out of the box. That is uncommon with new platforms like this so it was a pleasant surprise.

Test Configuration

We did our best to put together a representative test platform that would isolate onboard devices.

  • Motherboard/ SoC: Supermicro X10SDV-F with Intel Xeon D-1540 (pre-produciton with 1.9GHz base clock and 2.4GHz turbo)
  • RAM: 64GB (4x 16GB) Samsung DDR4 16GB RDIMMs
  • Power Supply: PicoPSU 150-XT with 144w power brick
  • Cooling: 1x Coolermaster 120mm A12025-20RB-3BN-F1
  • OS: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

We removed the Intel S3500 from the Intel Xeon D-1540 benchmarks and power consumption preview piece. Otherwise this is the same system.

Major Note: Please keep in mind, this is pre-production hardware. This information may change in the final version of the product. We will update the below as possible when we have shipping hardware.

Intel Xeon D-1500 series PCH

In our Intel Broadwell-DE launch piece we drew a parallel to the Intel C220 series PCH which is found with the Intel Xeon E3 V3 family. We used that PCH family to calculate power savings. It turns out that we were a bit closer than expected in terms of what we guessed. If you look at the raw lspci -v output below one will see lines that say:

As it turns out, almost all of the PCH peripherals are showing up as a C220 family PCH does. If one looks at the block diagram, this architecture may make sense:

While specifications do not match exactly, it does seem like the functionality of the E3’s PCH is close to that of the integrated PCH of Broadwell-DE and so Intel may have done this for compatibility reasons.

What about 10GbE?

A note on 10GbE – there is something interesting below for those looking closely:
