Today Tyan launched four new network adapters based on Broadcom Ethernet technology. Two adapters are 1 Gigabit Ethernet (the P1113 and P1115). The other two are 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapters the P1117 and P1118 and cover both optical and copper 10GbE connections. Generally server makers are able to offer cost-effective network adapters as add-ons for their servers. Broadcom has been seeing quite a few design wins lately with their 10GbE solutions (see an example here), and Tyan seems to be continuing in this manner.

The new Tyan Ethernet Cards

The P1113 Gigabit adapter is based on the Broadcom BCM5720 chipset which controls its dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. One of the more interesting aspects to the card is that it is a low profile PCIe 2.0 x1 card so it will fit in many server applications due to its small size.

The Tyan P1115 Gigabit Ethernet adapter is based on the BCM5719 controller. It is a quad port card that fits into a PCIe 2.0 x4 expansion slot. This is a larger full height card but with a compact 4x RJ-45 port set.

The Tyan P1117 Gigabit Ethernet adapter is based on the Broadcom BCM57712. The card features dual 10GBase-T Ethernet ports to use existing wiring infrastructure. The low profile card is available with low and full height brackets and fits into a PCIe 2.0 x8 expansion slot.

Like the P1117, the Tyan P1118 Gigabit Ethernet adapter is based on the Broadcom BCM57712 and has dual SFP+ ports. As such it supports longer distance communication through fiber SFP+ optics. The card is a PCIe 2.0 x8 card with low and full height brackets.

  1. It’s funny how only just recently, I was reading a forum filled with people screaming how bad Broadcom chipsets were without even having a clue.

I have always had a good run with BC chipsets and found them more stable than Intel and less fussy on drivers. Now they are the chosen weapon for Tyan, a company known to make some very decent gear and have done so for many years.

  2. It would’ve been nice to know how much these 10gbE parts are going to cost. I was hoping to see some downward price movement on 10gbE cards & switches :)
