After many months of waiting, we finally have the official Intel Xeon E3-1200 V5 server platform launch today. This is a slightly anti-climatic launch as we have already seen the launch of the Skylake desktop parts, Skylake Xeon E3 V5 mobile parts, and Skylake Xeon E3-1200 V5 workstation parts. During the Skylake Xeon E3-1200 V5 workstation launch we saw some vendors release what will be their server montherboards. From what we heard from industry sources and not less than four press members who came to STH for clarification, the fact that Intel has traditionally released workstation and server processors at the same time meant this launch was a bit confusing. Alas, today we have the Skylake Xeon E3-1200 V5 platform officially launched for servers.

Since the Intel ARK page was updated with the full line of Xeon E3-1200 V5 processors at launch, there is nothing new today other than the official release. Here is the comparison chart we made which still works for today’s release.

With the announcement of new 6 core/ 12 thread, 12 core/ 24 thread, and 16 core / 32 thread Xeon D chips with 10Gb networking, specialized accelerators, and twice the Intel Xeon E3-1200 V5’s memory capacity, we can see why there is little fanfare around the E3 V5 line.

Vendors seem to be taking advantage of the Greenlow platform’s eight SATA 3.0 ports such as Dell with the R330 and T330. The Intel C236 PCH can be found on almost every vendor’s platform whereas previous generations we saw lower end PCHs used.

We have seen the chips start to pop-up on popular retailers like Amazon

We have our first sample platforms and hope to get chips soon to start testing with.
