I am at the Equinix Analyst Day 2025. Equinix is an enormous global data center provider, and data centers are the hot topic in the industry today. Although there are parts of the day that are NDA, I wanted to share a few notable takeaways from the event. So far, the highlight has been the “Braggawatts.”

Please excuse typos as this is being captured live, and I have spent the last two days filming in data centers.

Equinix comes from the concept of being an Equal Network Internet Exchange 27 years ago.

Equinix showed its Silicon Valley data centers on a neat slide. This includes both the well-known (and quarter-century-old) SV1 data center, with over 200 carriers, and where over 90% of the Internet traffic for the West Coast of the US flows. It also includes new facilities for liquid-cooled AI cluster deployments.

I think it would be cool to check out some of these data centers in the future.

Hampton, Georgia, was shown as an example of a new xScale and retail data center built by the company, with 240MW of capacity.

Power is a big challenge for today’s AI build-out. Equinix has committed 1GW of capacity. There are 2GW of power applications in progress. Then there are 4GW of future power on the roadmap.

Equinix is also exploring the option of generating its own power. It has agreements with several SMR providers and already has Bloomenergy fuel cells installed, delivering several MW of clean energy to several of its data centers. Not to give too much away, but you might see Megawatts of Bloomenergy fuel cells on STH in a few weeks.

Equinix was built around connectivity; it is closing in on half a million interconnections across over 10,000 companies. This is a neat diagram, as it illustrates the differences in types of interconnects based on location.

Equinix has also been building an AI partnership ecosystem to help companies deploy AI more quickly. That also includes having an AI lab program that allows customers to test AI deployments, in partnership with others, around the world.

Here is a neat one, Equinix helped Uber move 6.5PB of data between two cloud providers.

Hundai is building its connected car experience that is currently running in three Equinix locations. This is an application space where every automobile manufacturer will have to deploy over the coming years, especially as cars increase their autonomous capabilities.

In the Americas region, Equinix has 109 data centers and is growing with over 250MW of xScale capacity being developed and thousands of new cabinets coming online over the next year.

Equinix also discussed some of the challenges associated with placing denser AI workloads in LATAM, where power reliability can be less consistent than in many US grids. Notably, this slide focuses on power, locations, and AI. Equinix has a product on the network fabric side that can geo-fence traffic flows, ensuring they stay within a country. This is particularly important when new local regulations on data processing are introduced, as organizations must ensure that data flows remain within the country.

In EMEA, Equinix is seeing AI inference workloads land in-region. This is not just the case in major markets like Frankfurt, but also in other markets such as Istanbul and Dubai.

Notable on this slide is that getting access to space and power is challenging. Due to the numerous layers of government and regulations, there are many announcements in EMEA that lack firm dates. Here is a great one: those announcements without firm dates are called “Braggawatts” of capacity.

In the APAC region, the company is expanding its presence in India and Southeast Asia. Recently, this development took shape with an acquisition that expanded into Manila, Philippines. Jakara Indonesia’s JK1 opened with 50 providers. Johor is small, but already full, as it is a result of Singapore’s spillover. In India, the company has just opened a data center in Chennai, as it is considered a strategic location for connectivity due to its proximity to undersea cables. The company gave several other examples of expansion.

Singapore has a lot of demand, but limited space and power. The government has given Equinix the ability to develop 20MW of power that it is attempting to bring online in late 2026, but it is likely to be in 2027. Roughly 80% of Singapore’s economy is supported by Equinix.

Equinix is continuing to evolve its interconnect story. Instead of just housing networking gear to connect networks, the company is moving towards building more intelligent fabrics.

The next generation of this involves building more AI fabric management and establishing networks for AI fabrics.

Final Words

We need to keep using “Braggawatts” since there are many announcements that seem like high-level ideas rather than concrete plans. Equinix is in a particularly advantageous position, as it is dominant in connectivity and operates many globally distributed data centers. At the same time, the extensive AI training and inferencing clusters have very different demands compared to those of Equinix. So Equinix is adapting its business and its capital investments to align with this high-growth market segment.

  1. Some of the numbers aren’t as impressive seeing the slides next to each other. For example they claim 250+MW of planned xscale capacity buildout, but the Hampton, GA location alone is 240MW of xscale.

So they only plan on building out another 10+ MW of capacity outside of GA?
