If you are looking to run the Intel Xeon Gold processors codenamed Skylake-SP, Trenton Systems has you covered both with 2U 2-node, 3-node or 4-node system called the MBS2000. You can get the Trenton Systems MBS2000 server nodes with either Intel Xeon E3-1200 V5 or Intel Xeon E3-1200 V6 processors. In addition to the E3 processors, there is a mention of another platform for what Trenton Systems dubs an “Intel Xeon Gold” processor.

Edit 2017-03-20: Just for clarification, the Intel Xeon E3 line we do not see taking the “Intel Xeon Gold” name. The “Xeon Gold” name has not been used by Intel in any publicly announced products to date. So the naming and specs may change. Additionally, Trenton Systems pulled the source PDF for this product that was used for this article.

The Trenton Systems MBS2000 2U server is a 19″ wide chassis that has redundant power supplies powering 2, 3 or 4 nodes.

When you look at the MBS2000 with nodes spanning a full 2U height, they can support up to two full height PCIe cards. That is useful in many cases where low profile card usage is not possible. The unit is also more shallow than many of the 2U 4-node systems we see that instead put heavy emphasis on hot swap storage options.

The Intel Xeon E3-1200 V6 CPUs are widely expected to be the server versions of the latest Intel Core i5/ i7 chips, however, those chips are not officially announced by Intel, yet. Kaby Lake does have some interesting improvements so expect that STH will have benchmarks and more information as those parts are officially released.

Perhaps the more interesting tidbit is the dual processor MSI8256 nodes that can handle Intel Xeon Gold 61xx series Skylake-SP processors. Each dual processor node can only handle 8 DDR4 DIMMs however we are seeing support for DDR4-2666 memory. By comparison, today’s dual processor Intel Xeon E5-2600 V4 CPUs only support DDR4-2400. We have come to expect a 266 DDR4 speed bump with each successive generation. The Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 generation supported up to DDR4-2133 by comparison. This is one of the, if not the first system publicly supporting the Intel Xeon Gold 61xx series CPUs.
