Patriot PS-100 Benchmark Update New Firmware v3.000

The Patriot PS-100 32GB continues to be a very low cost SSD after rebates. I purchased two of the drives early on and did both single drive and raid 0 benchmarks. After that I did PS-100 firmware 2.008 benchmarks. Recently, Patriot released a new firmware, v3.000 so I decided to try the flash and see if the claims of better small (4K) reads/ writes were better with the new firmware. I found that they are better, but there is a significant drawback.

Testing Update – Timeline, New SSDs, AMD Socket AM3 with USB 3.0 and SATA 3

I have decided to post a little roadmap of what’s next on the site. I am a list making person, so this will hopefully keep me goal oriented. The next few weeks I will be focusing on some Windows Home Server add-in reviews and guides, some Linux/ OpenSolaris on Hyper-V guides, and some hardware testing. Other potential thoughts I have are to write up how to get decent network performance from a WHS (i.e. over 90MB/s which it seems like there are people who can’t figure this out). I may also move into trying some ESXi virtualization guides, some FreeBSD/ OpenSolaris ZFS guides, and some hardware reviews and benchmarks.

AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz – Low Power WHS Review (In a BOX)

Although I am a big Intel CPU fan right now, I do run AMD systems also. Case and point, this weekend I bought an AMD Phenom II x4 955 + USB 3.0 and SATA 3 motherboard, and I built an AMD Sempron 140 based Windows Home Server (WHS). I decided to do a few benchmarks so that I could compare the Sempron 140 Sargas against the Intel i3-530 and i5-650. I did run into one problem, I didn’t have a spare case lying around, so I made one out of a Corsair Dominator GT (DDR3 1600 C7) box. Yes, this is a WHS in a cardboard box.

Patriot PS-100 Benchmark Update New Firmware v2.008

I got a note asking to update my original benchmark for the Patriot PS-100 32GB with results from the new Patriot PS-100 Firmware v2.008. Performance is said to be better and it is!

Update 6 June 2010: New Patriot PS-100 32GB Firmware v3.000 benchmarks are up.

The specs of the update are:

Firmware update #2.008

Firmware v2.006 doesn’t support Active Protection feature in Lenovo laptops. Firmware 2.008 fixed it by enabling Active Protection identify bit.

Some platforms had issue installing Windows 7 into SSD with firmware v2.006. The root cause is partial command will be NAK in background process and bank (0) is not loaded in PRAM. Firmware v2.008 has fixed this issue.

Firmware v2.006 has power on and loading Windows XP issue with some NVIDIA chipsets. Firmware v2.008 fixed it by changing default setting to MDMA mode 2.

In Apple Mac Book and Mac Book Pro, sometimes SSD with Firmware v2.006 will fail in reboot. Firmware v2.008 fixed this issue.
