Synology DSM 6.0 was (finally) released by the company. DSM 6.0 is the first major release since DSM 5.0 in 2014 (we skipped DSM 5.0 but moved to DSM 5.1 in November 2014.)  We took our long term Synology DS1812+ and tried to update to DSM 6.0.

Updating the aging Synology DS1812+ to Synology DSM 6.0

We published our Synology DS1812+ long term review 37 months ago but it has been running for over 3.5 years. At some point, one does begin to wonder whether updates will continue to be supported so when we saw the DSM 6.0 release, we were cautiously optimistic. Our Synology DS1812+ unit updated itself to the latest DSM 6.0 version:

One feature request we have is for an easy way to monitor historical uptime. We had 330+ days on our initial run but we would like to monitor each reboot.

With the meager Atom D2700 we will not be able to take advantage of many of the higher-end virtualization features (as we have been able to with our QNAP TVS-EC1280U-SAS-RP 2Ureview unit), however the fact that the system is still getting updates is excellent.

  1. It would actually be very interesting to see the “virtual DSM” in use. It would actually be really cool if you could install that on a standard hypervisoe like hyper-v or esxi. with dsm6 you get 1 free license, but they say additional license can be purchased. SDS?? 🙂 Could be useful to integrate with HA or replication in existing storage environments.
