Recently Quanta QCT released an Intel Xeon D-1531 based storage server. This is one of the first uses of the 45w TDP, 6 core 2.2GHz Xeon D-1531 part that we have seen. The QCT QuantaGrid SD1Q-1ULH storage server is interesting in that it packs a lot of storage in a 1U form factor. There is room for 6x 2.5″ SATA SSDs, 12x 3.5″ hard drives, and even a PCIe M.2 slot which means that one can fit up to 19 storage devices in this 1U form factor. Networking is provided by the Xeon D X552 dual port 10Gb SFP+ controller. QCT also touts an OCP mezzanine card slot which we have seen on other servers (e.g. in our ASUS RS520-E8-RS8 review.)
The QCT QuantaGrid SD1Q-1ULH is designed for scale out storage applications such as Ceph. We actually use an all-flash Ceph pool in our hosting cluster powered by Xeon D-1540 CPUs which works extremely well.
