Today HPE showed off a brand new AMD EPYC server. This is an important milestone as it is the first system from a top 3 server equipment manufacturer launched. This server is not on the HPE website just yet, but it has hit YouTube in the form of a walkthrough. As an aside, we have had 9 folks send us this news and the video as we are penning this story has 28 views. STH readers are certainly interested in AMD EPYC and HPE ProLiant machines. We have done more AMD EPYC 1P and 2P benchmarks and architectural deep dives than anywhere else on the Internet with plenty more to come.

HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Walkthrough

The HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 seems to be a dual socket AMD EPYC server. The system also offers a full set of 32x DDR4 DIMMs for maximum memory support (up to 4TB RAM.) Here is the video published on the official HPE Technology YouTube account today:

The server is configurable with multiple drive options including up to 30x 2.5″ SSDs or 24x NVMe SSDs. Beyond this, there is a dual M.2 boot drive option as well as dual internal USB headers for lightweight OS installations so that they do not take up valuable drive bays.
Since GPU compute is a major concern for our AI/ deep learning readers, we see that there is space for up to three double-wide GPUs or five single slot GPUs in the system. In addition, there are some of the standard features we would expect such as redundant power supplies and standard HPE iLO management.

Final Words

This is likely a soon to be released product but it is of momentous importance for HPE. Enterprise companies that buy primarily HPE servers want any servers they buy to be managed using their standard orchestration and management tools. The previously released HPE CloudLine CL3150 (see our coverage at Updated HPE CloudLine CL3150 with AMD EPYC Spotted at VMworld 2017) did not have iLO. By offering a ProLiant AMD EPYC server, AMD is greatly expanding the potential customer base and availability of EPYC platforms for enterprises. We will bring more information about this exciting new HPE EPYC server once it becomes available.

  1. When can we buy these? Just asked our rep and said not yet. It’s a godsend if we can use iLO.

PLEASE RELEASE HPE. WANT TO BUY. That video looks so good.

  2. Dang, video removed by the user – it was working earlier. Definitely some kind of oopsie over at HP there. The latest video on the HPE Technology youtube channel is now:
HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 Product Tour
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzWTneZ4YQ4
But the description is for the DL385, and says: Come see the HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Server and learn about the features that deliver a new formula for server virtualization.
But then the link is for the DL 580: Learn more at https://www.hpe.com/servers/dl580-gen10
